Over 40 Pakistanis Feared Dead in Boat Tragedy Near Morocco

ISLAMABAD, January 17, 2025 – A boat carrying 80 passengers, including several Pakistani nationals, capsized near the Moroccan port of Dakhla, leaving over 40 Pakistanis feared dead, the Foreign Office (FO) confirmed on Thursday.

FO Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan stated that the ill-fated vessel had departed from Mauritania before the tragedy occurred. Several survivors, including Pakistani nationals, have been rescued and are currently housed in a camp near Dakhla.

Pakistan’s Embassy in Rabat is actively coordinating with local authorities, and a dedicated team has been dispatched to provide on-ground assistance to the affected Pakistani citizens. In response to the incident, the Crisis Management Unit (CMU) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been activated to address the situation.

The FO assured that efforts are underway to support the survivors and verify the identities of the deceased in coordination with Moroccan authorities.
